Proclamation Ceremony Takes Place for Visit Gangwon Year as Part of the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year Campaign On December 21st, the Alpensia Convention Center in Gangwon Province held a proclamation ceremony of the 2017–2018 Visit Gangwon Year to wish for the success of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Before the proclamation started, the University Students’ National Smile Team welcomed the event attendees with promotional materials for the 2017–2018 Visit Gangwon Year, the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year, and the K-Smile Campaign. This proclamation ceremony was honored by the attendance of 500 workers in many different fields—transportation, restaurants, shopping, tour information, and accommodation, among others—who help tourists visiting Gangwon to create precious and enjoyable memories. In particular, the Visit Korea Committee received an appreciation plaque for its contribution to the successful hosting of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and the development of tourism in Gangwon through the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year and K-Smile Campaign. The event proceeded with various programs, including a “Kindness Statement” performance with Workers’ National Smile Team members in Gangwon and a commemorative ceremony in which the main guests participated. Appointment Ceremony for the Members of the 12th Workers’ National Smile Team
Appointment Ceremony for the Members of the 12th Workers’ National Smile Team On December 19th, the Visit Korea Committee appeared at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan! What’s going on? Actually, the appointment ceremony of the 12th Workers’ National Smile Team is held today! The lobby in front of the main hall was so busy and crowded with many events before the ceremony. The members of the Workers’ National Smile Team are model workers of the tourism industry who represent Korea in welcoming foreign tourists at different points of contact with them, including in transportation, restaurants, shopping, accommodation, ports of entry/exit, and sharing of tourist information. These members are appointed through recommendations of local governments and related organizations and subsequent screening by an assessment committee. They publicize their own welcome practices and make contributions to the creation and spread of a welcoming atmosphere at their respective workplaces. The message wall became covered by messages written by the new appointees out of their sincere heart wishing for Korea to be fuller of smiles! The pledges of kindness made on tablet PCs drew attention. Everyone actively made his/her own pledge with a strong interest! A profile photo was taken to preserve the proud and beautiful smile of every member. One of the awarders of appointment certificate letters said that the most beautiful flower is a smile flower. Maybe everyone has a smile flower corsage on their left chest. 😀 A video interview was conducted on a side. I’m looking forward to watching the video containing today’s excitement and honorable moments! University Students’ National Smile Team members helped with the event today as well. 🙂 Inside the event hall, some people had already taken up seats and were taking commemorative photos. Even their backs seem as if they’re also full of smiles, right? At 3 pm, the 132 members of the Workers’ National Smile Team filled up all seats. Until now, a total of 548 people have been appointed as members of the Workers’ National Smile Team and thus active in practicing the K-Smile Campaign! Unfortunately, we could not award everyone an appointment certificate letter due to time limit, but we would like to send a congratulatory applause to the workers who received the certificate representing their respective points of contact with tourists! This performance was the grand finale of the appointment ceremony. Three giant balls appeared, reading “National Smile Team.” They lighted up as Vice Chairman Kim Hong-ju, Secretary-General Han Kyung-ah, and 10 representatives of tourist points put their hands on the balls at the same time. And two banners were rolling out down the wall, showing the K-Smile slogan. 🙂 Today’s event ended with commemorative photographing with all the attendees. We look forward to the smiles and kindness of these members of the Workers’ National Smile Team from now on. Korea’s smiles ♬ make the world smile. ♬ K-Smile! Closing Ceremony of the 2016 Korea Tourism Year
Closing Ceremony of the 2016 Korea Tourism Year The Visit Korea Committee participated in the closing ceremony of the 2016 Korea Tourism Year held in Beijing, China on December 15th! For the purpose of expanding the tourism exchange between South Korea and China, the year 2015 was designated as the China Tourism Year and the year 2016 as the Korea Tourism Year. To this closing ceremony were invited 150 guests from the South Korean and Chinese governments and tourism industries. The attendees reflected on the achievements of the past two years for tours in the two countries, in particular the 2016 Korea Tourism Year, celebrated the success of these two years, and cemented the ties between South Korea and China! Let’s take a look into the ceremony! Before the event, a booth was set up and run to publicize the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year campaign and the Korea Grand Sale, which would start on the upcoming January 20th, 2017. We found Ambassador Lee Minho’s face shining brightly here. Leaflets of the Korea Grand Sale and Visit Korea Year put neatly at the booth! And there are giveaways at the side to give out to the winners of a roulette event! People engaged in the Chinese tourism industry visited the booth of the Visit Korea Committee with much interest! With screening videos for reflection on the China and Korea Tourism Years and for the publicizing of Korean tours, the closing ceremony has eventually started! Minister Cho Yoonsun of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is delivering a welcoming speech. At the last part of the event, a commemorative performance was played to solidify the coexistence, cooperation, and friendship between the two countries. Secretary-General Han Kyung-ah of the committee also joined the performance! We look forward to Korea and China cooperating and exchanging with each other for the further development of tourism in both countries.

Information Conference for 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year Programs Held in Chengdu, China On December 13, an information conference for the programs of the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year campaign was held in Chengdu, China. With the invitation of Chinese corporate officers and other VIPs, representatives of tourism agencies, and local media reporters, the campaign’s various programs of welcoming foreign tourists were publicized, including the Korea Grand Sale. Let’s jump right into the event, shall we? Upon arriving, the emblem of the Visit Korea Year was seen from afar! Before the main event, the visitors signed in the visitors’ book at the reception. The pages were turned over and over! This surely means there were a great number of attendees, right? The event hall filled with participants! Even before the event, so palpable were the strong interest in the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year campaign and its various programs. The information conference began with a welcoming address by Secretary-General Han Kyung-ah of the committee! Clapping! The welcoming address was then followed by presentations of the committee’s partners—Severance Hospital Health Check-Up Center and Asiana Airline—on their businesses. It was very impressive to watch the attendees pay such close attention to the presentations! And the Drawing Show that attracted so much interest! At first, it was a riddling picture but at some point it turned into a beautiful picture with the Visit Korea Year emblem in it. Now is the time for the commemorative photo of the VIP guests. Everybody was holding lucky bags wishing both countries to share the good luck. The bags contained a Korea Grand Sale leaflet and various souvenirs. 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year Is Publicized at Korea Destination Seminar in Malaysia
2016–2018 Visit Korea Year Is Publicized at Korea Destination Seminar in Malaysia From December 7 to 8, the Visit Korea Committee participated in the Korea Destination Seminar in Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu. This seminar is one of the major B2B conferences in Malaysia. Here, the committee introduced the campaign of the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year and its accompanying programs, including the Korea Grand Sale. Now, let’s have a look at the vivid moments of the event! We’ve arrived at the place of the B2B seminar. The emblem of the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year is seen here and there. Staff members of local Malaysian travel agencies, both wholesalers and retailers, were informed about the campaign of the 2016–2018 Visit Korea Year. A presentation was also delivered to give more detailed information specifically for local travel agencies. Many attendees took pictures of the presentation screen using their cellphones! Perhaps this means their strong interest in the Visit Korea Committee, doesn’t it? 🙂 Next day, the B2B seminar moved to Kota Kinabalu. We saw Malaysian people’s big interest in Korean culture and tours through the workers in the Malaysian tourism industry, as much as it was at the past MATTA Fair held from September 2 to 4 in Malaysia (▶ Click here to see the article about this event) We hope that there will be ever-more increasing exchanges between South Korea and Malaysia from now on. 🙂
